What a BIM coordinator does

A BIM coordinator manages the building information models a project depends on. They set up and enforce model standards, templates and naming conventions, federate architectural, structural and mechanical, electrical and plumbing models, run clash detection, and lead coordination meetings where conflicts are assigned and tracked to resolution. They also support the project team with Revit families, troubleshooting and model health, and manage files in the common data environment.

For architects, engineers and contractors, the coordinator protects the schedule and budget by finding conflicts before construction. On projects that follow ISO 19650, they help apply the information management requirements, such as the BIM execution plan and the delivery standards agreed with the client. Finch screens for real coordination experience on live projects, not only modelling ability, since the role depends on leading people from several disciplines.

Hiring a BIM coordinator: common questions

What is the difference between a BIM coordinator and a BIM manager?

A BIM coordinator usually works at the project level, managing models, clash detection and coordination meetings. A BIM manager typically sets standards, software strategy and training across the firm and supervises coordinators. Smaller firms often combine the two. We clarify the scope in the consultation so candidates know whether the role is project-based or firm-wide.

Do contractors and design firms need different BIM coordinators?

Often, yes. A design-side coordinator focuses on model standards, documentation and consultant coordination. A contractor-side coordinator works more with trade models, fabrication and installation sequencing, and spends more time with site teams. Candidates can move between the two, but recent experience on your side of the project usually shortens the learning curve.
