Finch Employment

Finance, real estate & crypto recruitmentMortgage and lending recruitment in Toronto and across Canada

Finch recruits mortgage agents, brokers, underwriters, administrators and mortgage specialists for brokerages, banks, credit unions and lenders in the GTA and across Canada.

Mortgage broker reviewing an application with a client in an Ontario brokerage

Mortgage hiring sits between sales and risk. Brokerages need licensed agents who bring in applications and present them cleanly to lenders. Lenders need underwriters and administrators who catch problems before funding and keep files in order afterwards. Banks and credit unions need mortgage specialists who can build referral networks in their communities. In each case a weak hire costs more than a salary: declined deals, compliance findings or a pipeline that stalls.

Finch works on a retainer basis for mortgage brokerages, lenders and financial institutions in Toronto, the GTA and across Canada. We begin with a consultation about your lender panel, product mix and compliance expectations. We then advertise, source and screen candidates, confirm licence status with the regulator where one applies, and present a shortlist of suitable people. We arrange the interviews and stay in touch after the start date.

Why mortgage hiring takes a specialist

Licence class matters: in Ontario a Mortgage Agent Level 1 cannot place deals with private lenders, so the wrong licence limits what a new hire can do.

Production figures are easy to inflate in an interview, and real performance depends on lender relationships, file quality and how the business is sourced.

Bank, broker and private lending channels follow different rules and cultures, so experience in one channel does not always transfer to another.

Underwriting and administration roles need careful, detail-minded people, who rarely respond to sales-style job advertisements and usually must be sourced directly.

How we screen mortgage & lending candidates

  • Licence class and status on FSRA's public licence search, or with the equivalent regulator outside Ontario
  • Lending channels the candidate knows: banks, monoline lenders, credit unions or private lenders
  • File quality, including income verification, documentation and conditions management
  • Understanding of FINTRAC, privacy and suitability obligations that apply to the role
  • Eligibility to work in Canada and fit with your compensation model

Mortgage & lending recruitment: questions employers ask

Do all mortgage roles require an FSRA licence?

No. In Ontario, individuals who deal or trade in mortgages for a brokerage need a mortgage agent or broker licence from FSRA, and the law defines dealing broadly. Employees of banks and credit unions dealing in mortgages for their employer are exempt. Whether an underwriter or administrator needs a licence depends on the employer and the duties, so we confirm it with you first.

Can you recruit mortgage professionals for lenders outside Ontario?

Yes. We run searches for employers across Canada by phone and video from our Toronto office. Mortgage licensing is provincial, so a candidate needs the licence issued in the province where they will deal in mortgages, for example from BCFSA in British Columbia or RECA in Alberta. We confirm the provincial requirement before we advertise.

How are fees set for a mortgage search?

Finch works on a retainer basis only. We agree the fee for each position based on its requirements, such as licence level, seniority and how specialized the lending channel is. The retainer is paid up front to begin the search. During the consultation we set out what the retainer covers and what happens at each stage of the search.
