Durham Region runs east of Toronto along Lake Ontario and north to the shore of Lake Simcoe. Its economy has deep roots in energy and automotive manufacturing. It is home to Ontario Power Generation's Pickering and Darlington nuclear stations, Ontario Tech University and Durham College in Oshawa, and the Lakeridge Health hospital network. The northern townships are agricultural and small-town, with employers that may hire only a few professionals a year but need each one to be the right fit.

Many Durham residents commute west into Toronto, which means employers here are often trying to attract people who already have a job and would value working closer to home. Finch's retainer-based search is built for that. We approach professionals directly, explain what your role offers, and screen them carefully before you meet anyone. We only put forward people with existing authorization to work in Canada, and we coordinate interviews so the process does not pull your managers away from their work.

Automotive and advanced manufacturing

Oshawa's long history of automotive assembly supports parts suppliers, tool and die shops and fabricators across Durham. We check Ontario certificates of qualification and CWB welding certification where required, and look for candidates with experience in the processes your plant actually runs.

Growing communities and local services

New neighbourhoods in Ajax, Whitby, north Oshawa and Clarington bring demand for builders, property managers and dental offices. Many of these are small employers without HR staff. We run the whole search for them and favour candidates who live in Durham, since a short commute matters to people who have spent years driving to Toronto.

Recruiting in Durham Region: cities and boroughs

How we recruit for Durham Region employers

Durham searches are handled from our North York office over phone and video. When it helps to see your workplace, such as a plant floor or a clinic, an in-person visit can be arranged by appointment. Our first conversation covers the role, required licences or site access requirements, shift schedules and the commute, since a location near Highway 401 or the GO Lakeshore East line widens the candidate pool.

With the retainer in place, we advertise in Durham and the eastern parts of Toronto, approach passive candidates, and screen for experience, certificates and eligibility to work in Canada. Where a role is regulated, we confirm standing on the relevant Ontario register, such as PEO for professional engineers or Skilled Trades Ontario for certified trades. You receive a shortlist, we book the interviews, and we follow up after your new hire starts.

Recruiting in Durham Region: common questions

Can you recruit for contractors working on energy projects in Durham?

Yes. We recruit engineers, project managers, quality and safety staff and skilled trades for companies that supply or work at energy sites. We screen for relevant experience and credentials, such as a P.Eng. licence from PEO or a Skilled Trades Ontario certificate. Site security and access clearances are handled by the site operator and your company, not by Finch.

Do you recruit in the rural townships, such as Uxbridge, Scugog and Brock?

Yes. Rural roles often need a more targeted search because the local pool is small and few candidates want a long drive. We look in the townships themselves and in nearby communities in Durham, York Region and the City of Kawartha Lakes, and we discuss commute expectations with each candidate early on.

Is it harder to hire in Durham than in Toronto?

It is different rather than harder. Durham has many experienced professionals, but many of them commute to Toronto and are not looking at local postings. A direct search that reaches those people, and explains the benefit of working closer to home, often turns up candidates a job board would miss.
