Finch Employment

Professional & office recruitmentLegal recruitment in Toronto and the GTA

Finch recruits law clerks, paralegals, legal assistants, conveyancers and legal receptionists for law firms and in-house legal teams across the GTA.

Law clerk reviewing legal files at a desk in a law office

Legal support staff keep a practice running. Law clerks prepare documents and manage files, paralegals handle matters within their licensed scope, conveyancers close real estate deals on deadline, and receptionists and assistants protect your time and your clients' confidence. When one of these seats sits empty, lawyers end up doing administrative work they cannot bill for, and deadlines become a risk. Finch recruits legal support professionals for firms and legal departments in Toronto, North York, Vaughan, Markham, Mississauga, Brampton and across the GTA.

Before we start, we learn about your practice areas, the software you use, your file volume and how your team divides work between lawyers and staff. We then advertise, source and screen candidates against those requirements, including checking the Law Society of Ontario directory where a paralegal licence is needed. You receive a shortlist of suitable candidates, we arrange the interviews, and we follow up after the start date. Our work is on a retainer, agreed per position.

Why legal support hiring needs a careful search

Practice areas are not interchangeable, and a clerk with years of litigation experience may need significant training before handling corporate or real estate files.

Paralegal titles are used loosely, so you need to know whether a candidate holds a Law Society of Ontario licence and whether the role requires one.

Confidentiality and accuracy are essential, and a single missed deadline or misfiled document can create real exposure for the firm and its clients.

Experienced legal staff often move through referrals rather than job boards, so reaching them takes direct outreach to people who are not actively applying.

How we screen legal candidates

  • Practice-area experience that matches your files, such as litigation, real estate, corporate, family or estates
  • Licence status with the Law Society of Ontario for roles that require a paralegal licence
  • Working knowledge of the legal software, e-filing and registration systems your office uses
  • Attention to detail and written accuracy, tested through document and correspondence samples where appropriate
  • Discretion with confidential information, confirmed through reference checks with previous supervising lawyers or managers

Legal recruitment: questions employers ask

What is the difference between a law clerk and a paralegal in Ontario?

Licensed paralegals are regulated by the Law Society of Ontario and can provide certain legal services directly within a limited scope, such as Small Claims Court and some tribunal matters. Law clerks are not licensed and work under a lawyer's supervision, preparing documents and managing files. We help you decide which role fits the work you need done.

Do you recruit for in-house legal departments as well as law firms?

Yes. Corporations, insurers, municipalities and other organizations hire law clerks, legal assistants and paralegals too. In-house work often differs from private practice, with more contract management, compliance support and internal stakeholders. We screen for experience in the setting you work in, so candidates understand the pace and priorities of an in-house team.

Can you help with a confidential search to replace a current employee?

We can. Some firms need to recruit before a departure is announced, or want to strengthen a role without unsettling the team. We can advertise without naming your firm, share your identity only with shortlisted candidates at the right stage and handle outreach discreetly. Tell us about any confidentiality requirements during the consultation.
