Finch Employment

Technology & engineering recruitmentArchitecture and interior design recruitment in Toronto and the GTA

Finch helps design firms, developers and builders in Toronto and the GTA hire architects, architectural technologists, interior designers and BIM coordinators with the credentials and software skills the work demands.

Architect reviewing a building model and drawings in a design studio

Design hiring has two halves. Credentials decide who can legally take responsibility for drawings, use a protected title or prepare permit documents in Ontario. Portfolio and software skills decide who can actually produce the work your projects need, on your templates and to your standards. Getting one half right and missing the other leads to rework, permit delays and frustrated project leads.

Finch Employment recruits for architecture practices, interior design studios, engineering consultancies, developers and contractors on a retainer basis. After a consultation about your project types, team structure and software, we advertise, source and screen candidates, confirm registration status with the relevant body and present a shortlist of suitable people. We arrange the interviews and follow up after the start date, so your senior designers stay on billable work.

Why design and architecture hiring takes a specialist

Protected titles matter: in Ontario, architects are licensed by the OAA and the title Interior Designer is reserved for ARIDO registered members, so status must be confirmed.

Portfolios usually show team projects, so you need to find out which drawings, details and design decisions the candidate personally produced.

Software expectations vary widely; one firm runs everything in Revit with ISO 19650 workflows while another still delivers most work in AutoCAD.

Experience with permit drawings, Ontario Building Code compliance and contract administration differs sharply between candidates with similar years in the field.

How we screen architecture & interior design candidates

  • Registration status with the Ontario Association of Architects, ARIDO or OACETT, or progress toward it, as the role requires
  • Portfolio review focused on the candidate's own contribution to each project
  • Software depth in Revit, AutoCAD, Navisworks, SketchUp or the presentation tools your team uses
  • Familiarity with the Ontario Building Code, permit submissions and, where relevant, BCIN qualification
  • The project types and scale they have worked on, from residential and retail interiors to institutional and mixed-use buildings

Architecture & interior design recruitment: questions employers ask

Can someone without a licence work in an architecture firm?

Yes. Many people in architecture practices, including intern architects, designers and technologists, work under the direction of a licensed architect. In Ontario, the title architect and the practice of architecture are regulated by the Ontario Association of Architects under the Architects Act. We confirm each candidate's exact status so your job titles and responsibilities stay accurate.

Do you recruit for interior design studios and in-house design teams?

Yes. We recruit for independent studios, architecture firms with interiors groups, retailers, hospitality groups and developers. We confirm whether a candidate is an ARIDO registered member, which matters because the title Interior Designer is reserved for registered members in Ontario, and we review each portfolio and skill set against your work.

How does a retainer search work for design roles?

You start with a consultation about the role, your project mix and your team. Finch then agrees a fee for the position based on its requirements, and the retainer is paid up front to begin the search. We advertise, source and screen, present a shortlist, arrange interviews and follow up after your new hire starts.
