Finch Employment

Technology & engineering recruitmentSoftware developer recruitment in Toronto and the GTA

Finch helps Toronto and GTA employers hire developers, testers and DevOps engineers who can do the work you need, through a retainer search built around your stack.

Hiring a developer looks simple on paper. You post the job, applications arrive, and then the real work starts: separating people who can ship maintainable code from people who list every framework they have ever read about. For a business owner or a small HR team, that sorting takes weeks of evenings, technical interviews you may not feel qualified to run and a real risk of hiring the wrong person.

Finch Employment works on a retainer basis for employers across Toronto and the GTA. We start with a consultation about your product, your stack and your team, then advertise, source and screen candidates against those requirements. You receive a shortlist of suitable developers, we arrange the interviews and we follow up after the start date. You spend your time on the final decision, not the first pass.

Why hiring developers takes a specialist

Job titles mean different things at different companies, so a senior developer at one firm may have the experience of an intermediate at another.

Résumés are crowded with frameworks and buzzwords, which makes it hard to tell real hands-on experience from a short course or a weekend tutorial.

Strong developers usually already have jobs and rarely answer generic postings, so reaching them takes direct sourcing and a clear pitch about your work.

Technical skill is only half the hire; you also need someone who writes readable code, takes code review well and explains trade-offs to non-technical colleagues.

How we screen software development candidates

  • Hands-on experience with the languages, frameworks and tools in your stack, confirmed through detailed technical conversation
  • Code quality habits such as version control, automated testing, code review and documentation
  • The size and type of projects the candidate has worked on, and their actual role in each
  • Communication with non-technical stakeholders and comfort with your team's way of working, whether agile, Kanban or less formal
  • Eligibility to work in Canada, location and availability for on-site, hybrid or remote arrangements

Software development recruitment: questions employers ask

Do you test candidates' coding skills?

We screen technical experience through structured conversations about each candidate's projects, tools and decisions, and we can include a take-home exercise or a technical assessment you provide. Many employers prefer to run their own final technical interview, and we arrange it. The aim is that every developer on your shortlist has already shown the experience the role requires before you spend time with them.

Can you recruit for remote or hybrid developer roles?

Yes. Many development roles in the GTA are hybrid or fully remote. During the consultation we confirm where the person must live or work, your time zone needs and how often you expect them in the office. We then screen candidates against those terms so there are no surprises at offer stage.

How are fees set for developer searches?

Finch works on a retainer basis only. The fee is agreed per position based on its requirements, such as seniority, specialization and how hard the skills are to find. The retainer is paid up front to begin the search, and we explain exactly what it covers during the consultation so you know what to expect.
