What a branch manager does

A branch manager runs a single location of a multi-site business, with responsibility for its sales, service, staff and results. Depending on your industry, the branch might be a distribution or equipment rental depot, a building supply outlet, a trades or services office, or a financial services office. The manager hires and leads the team, builds local customer relationships, controls costs, follows company standards and reports performance to regional or head-office leadership.

Strong branch managers combine sales drive with operational discipline, and they need both to succeed. Finch screens for comparable branch or location leadership, results against sales and margin targets, and the ability to hire and keep good staff. In regulated sectors such as financial services or insurance, we confirm that candidates hold the registrations or licences your branch requires. References with former regional managers help confirm how each candidate performed against company standards.

Hiring a branch manager: common questions

Should we promote from within or recruit an external branch manager?

Internal promotion rewards loyalty and keeps knowledge in the business, but it can leave a gap in the role the person leaves. An external hire brings fresh experience and proven leadership from elsewhere. Some employers recruit externally while considering an internal candidate alongside, and we can benchmark outside candidates so you can compare fairly.

Can you recruit branch managers for a new location?

Yes. Opening a branch calls for someone who can hire a team from scratch, set up processes and build a customer base quickly. We look for candidates with start-up or turnaround experience and local market knowledge, and we screen for the energy and independence a new location needs during its first stage.
