What an industrial electrician (442A) does

Industrial electricians install, maintain and repair electrical equipment in manufacturing plants, processing facilities and other industrial settings. Their work covers motors, motor controls, variable frequency drives, programmable logic controllers, instrumentation and power distribution. In Ontario, the trade is recognized through the 442A Industrial Electrician certificate of qualification issued by Skilled Trades Ontario, and many plants look for it when hiring.

For a plant, a strong industrial electrician is the difference between a quick repair and a long shutdown. Finch screens candidates for the equipment and controls they have worked on, how they approach fault finding under pressure and their familiarity with lockout and tagout and arc flash safety. We also ask about shift availability and on-call work, so the people you meet fit your operation.

Hiring an industrial electrician (442A): common questions

Should we hire a 442A or a 309A for our plant?

A 442A Industrial Electrician is trained specifically for industrial equipment and controls, which suits most plant maintenance roles. Some 309A electricians also have strong industrial backgrounds. The right choice depends on your equipment and any construction or building work the role includes. We review this with you during the consultation.

Can you find electricians with PLC programming experience?

Yes. PLC skills range from basic troubleshooting to modifying and writing logic. We ask which platforms you use and how much programming the role involves, then screen candidates with technical questions about their real experience. That helps separate people who have changed logic on a live line from those who have only seen it in training.
