What a medical receptionist does

A medical receptionist is the first person patients speak to, whether on the phone or at the front desk. They book and confirm appointments, check patients in, validate health cards, answer questions and keep the waiting room moving. They also deal with anxious, unwell or frustrated people every day. For a clinic, a skilled receptionist means fewer missed appointments, a calmer waiting room and physicians who start each visit on time.

The role looks simple from the outside, but it combines customer service, multitasking and strict confidentiality. Finch asks about your call volume, booking system, the languages your patients speak and the kind of atmosphere you want at the front desk. We screen for steady temperament and accuracy as well as EMR experience, so the receptionist you hire can cope with a busy Monday morning.

Hiring a medical receptionist: common questions

Should we hire a receptionist with medical office experience?

It helps, but it is not the only option. Candidates from dental offices, pharmacies or other client-facing roles can learn medical booking quickly if they have the right temperament. If your clinic relies on complex scheduling or billing, prior medical office experience becomes more important, and we will screen accordingly.

Can a medical receptionist also handle billing?

Some can. Many receptionists learn basic payment collection and third-party billing, but full OHIP claims management is usually the work of a medical office assistant. If you need both skills in one person, we will look for candidates with billing experience and adjust the search to match.
