What a purchasing manager does

A purchasing manager runs the buying function. They set purchasing policy and approval limits, lead and develop buyers, decide which suppliers to consolidate or replace, and negotiate the largest agreements personally. They work closely with operations on what needs to be bought and when, with finance on budgets and payment terms, and with quality on supplier performance. In smaller companies they may also oversee logistics or inventory planning.

This hire shapes your cost base for years. A capable manager reduces dependence on single suppliers, plans for price increases instead of reacting to them and builds a team that buys to forecast rather than to emergencies. Finch looks for candidates whose experience matches your sector and spend, and who have genuinely led people, not just held the title while working as the most senior buyer.

Hiring a purchasing manager: common questions

Should we hire a purchasing manager or another senior buyer?

If purchasing decisions keep getting escalated to owners or operations leaders, or buyers are working without clear policy, a manager usually pays for itself in control and consistency. If the team already has strong leadership and simply needs more capacity, a senior buyer may be enough. We help you weigh this during the consultation, before any search begins.

Do purchasing managers need sector-specific experience?

It matters more in some sectors than others. Food, pharmaceutical and other regulated manufacturers deal with supplier approval and traceability requirements that take time to learn. Indirect purchasing and general distribution skills transfer more easily. We discuss which experience is essential for you and which can be learned on the job, then screen accordingly.
