What a social media coordinator does

A social media coordinator manages your company's presence on the platforms where your customers spend time. They plan a content calendar, create or adapt posts, photos and short videos, publish on schedule, respond to comments and messages, and track engagement. For many businesses, social media is the first place a prospective customer or job candidate checks, so the coordinator effectively shapes first impressions of your brand every day.

Because so much of the role is public, judgement matters as much as creativity. A poorly worded reply or off-brand post can spread quickly. Finch screens for candidates who understand your audience, write in a clear and appropriate voice and know when to escalate a sensitive comment. We also look at the platforms they have managed for an employer or client, since running a personal account well is not the same as representing a business.

Typical responsibilities

  • Plan and maintain a social media content calendar aligned with marketing goals
  • Create, edit and schedule posts, graphics and short-form video
  • Monitor comments and direct messages and respond in the company's voice
  • Coordinate with marketing, sales and leadership on announcements and campaigns
  • Track engagement and audience growth and prepare regular reports
  • Stay current on platform changes and recommend new content approaches

Qualifications and credentials

  • Experience managing social media accounts for a business, brand or client
  • Strong writing skills and an eye for visual content
  • Familiarity with scheduling tools and basic photo and video editing apps
  • Understanding of platform analytics and engagement measures
  • A diploma or degree in marketing, communications or media is often preferred

Hiring a social media coordinator: common questions

Do we need a social media coordinator or a broader marketing hire?

If social media is a major source of customers or brand awareness for you, a dedicated coordinator makes sense. If it is one channel among many, a marketing coordinator with strong social skills may be a better fit. We review your goals and current workload during the consultation and suggest which role to recruit.

How do you judge a candidate's content quality?

We review real examples from business accounts the candidate managed and ask them to explain the goal, audience and result of each one. We pay attention to writing, visual consistency and how well the content matched the brand. We can share these examples with you so you can judge style for yourself.
