What an automotive service technician does

Automotive service technicians inspect, diagnose, maintain and repair cars and light trucks. On a typical day that means scan-tool diagnostics, brake and suspension work, engine and driveline repairs, electrical troubleshooting and scheduled maintenance, followed by clear notes on the repair order. In a dealership they also complete warranty and recall work to manufacturer standards. The quality of their diagnosis decides whether a customer’s car is fixed the first time or comes back.

Automotive service technician is a compulsory trade in Ontario, so only certified technicians and registered apprentices can legally do the work. That shrinks the pool, and the best technicians tend to stay where they are busy and well equipped. Finch approaches working technicians directly, confirms certificates on the Skilled Trades Ontario public register and matches brand, diagnostic and hybrid or electric vehicle experience to your shop, so you interview people ready for real work.

Typical responsibilities

  • Diagnosing drivability, electrical and mechanical faults using scan tools, wiring diagrams and service information
  • Repairing and replacing brakes, steering, suspension, engine, transmission and driveline components
  • Performing scheduled maintenance and multi-point inspections, then recommending needed work to the service advisor
  • Completing warranty, recall and campaign repairs to manufacturer procedures at dealer shops
  • Writing accurate cause and correction notes on repair orders for billing and warranty claims
  • Carrying out safety standards inspections where the shop is a licensed DriveON vehicle inspection centre

Qualifications and credentials

  • Skilled Trades Ontario certificate of qualification as an automotive service technician (310S), kept active because the trade is compulsory
  • Red Seal endorsement, which many employers value and which helps technicians moving between provinces
  • For safety inspections, registration as a technician in Ontario’s DriveON program and completion of its required online training
  • Manufacturer training for the brands you service, often expected by dealerships
  • Ozone depletion prevention (ODP) training, which employers commonly require for air conditioning work
  • Hybrid and electric vehicle high-voltage training, valued by many shops

Who hires an automotive service technician

  • New car dealerships
  • Independent repair garages
  • Tire and auto service chains
  • Municipal and corporate fleet maintenance departments
  • Used vehicle dealers with in-house reconditioning

Hiring an automotive service technician: common questions

Can an apprentice do the work of a licensed technician?

Not on their own. Because automotive service technician is a compulsory trade in Ontario, a person must hold a certificate of qualification, a provisional certificate or a registered training agreement as an apprentice to do the work. If you want an apprentice, we can look for one who is already registered so your licensed staff can supervise and train them.

Do you check whether a technician can do safety inspections?

Yes. Safety standards certificates in Ontario are now issued through the DriveON program at vehicle inspection centres licensed by the Ministry of Transportation. Technicians need an active certificate of qualification, DriveON registration and the program’s required training. We ask each candidate where they stand, so you know what steps remain before they can inspect at your centre.
