What a hospitalist does

A hospitalist cares for patients admitted to hospital, often in place of the patient's own family physician. They manage acute medical problems, coordinate tests and consultations, communicate with families and plan safe discharges. Hospitalists are typically family physicians or internists who prefer inpatient work. For a hospital, a stable hospitalist group improves continuity on the wards, supports patient flow and eases the pressure on emergency and specialist colleagues.

Hospitalist roles involve shift schedules, rounding and sometimes overnight call, so candidates pay close attention to how the service is organized. Finch learns about your program's patient volume, scheduling model, team composition and privileging process. We then approach physicians whose experience and preferred schedule fit, and we gather the details hospitals need for credentialing, so your medical staff office has fewer gaps to chase.

Hiring a hospitalist: common questions

Can Finch help with the hospital privileging process?

Privileges are granted by the hospital through its own credentialing and medical advisory process, so the decision is yours. What we can do is collect and organize the information your medical staff office typically requests, such as registration details, certifications and references, so the application moves without unnecessary delays.

Do hospitalists have to be internists?

No. In Ontario, many hospitalists are family physicians, and others are internists. The right background depends on the acuity of your patients and how your program is structured. During the consultation we discuss your patient mix so we can target candidates with suitable training and inpatient experience.
