What a refrigeration mechanic does

Refrigeration mechanics install, maintain and repair refrigeration and air conditioning systems in commercial and industrial settings. Their work includes walk-in coolers and freezers, display cases, ice machines, rooftop units, chillers and process cooling equipment. In Ontario, the trade is certified through the 313A Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic certificate of qualification issued by Skilled Trades Ontario, and employers should confirm it for every hire.

For a grocery store, restaurant, warehouse or food plant, a refrigeration failure can mean lost product and lost business. Finch screens candidates for the systems and controls they have worked on, their diagnostic skill, refrigerant handling certification and comfort with on-call service. We also look at how they communicate with facility managers under pressure, since they are often called in when something has already gone wrong.

Hiring a refrigeration mechanic: common questions

What is the difference between a refrigeration mechanic and an HVAC technician?

There is overlap, but refrigeration mechanics focus on cooling systems such as walk-ins, display cases, chillers and process refrigeration, usually in commercial and industrial settings. HVAC technicians often concentrate on heating, ventilation and comfort cooling. We help you decide which profile suits your equipment and screen candidates for the right experience.

Can you find mechanics willing to work on call?

Yes. We discuss your on-call schedule, response expectations and service area with candidates early in the screening process, so there are no surprises at the interview. People who are not comfortable with after-hours work are filtered out before you meet them, which saves time on both sides.
