What a systems administrator does

A systems administrator installs, configures and maintains the servers and core services your organization depends on. Typical work includes managing Windows or Linux servers, Active Directory or Entra ID, Microsoft 365, file storage, virtualization platforms and backups. They apply patches, monitor system health, plan capacity, restore data when something is lost and often support help desk staff and coordinate with outside vendors.

When systems administration is neglected, the result is often discovered during a crisis: a failed backup, an expired certificate or an unpatched server. A dependable administrator prevents these problems with routine maintenance and good records. Finch screens candidates for depth in your platforms, their backup and recovery experience and how they plan and communicate changes, so the people you meet can take ownership of your systems.

Hiring a systems administrator: common questions

Can a systems administrator also manage our cybersecurity?

A good systems administrator handles important security basics such as patching, access control and backups. Dedicated security work, including threat monitoring, incident response and security assessments, is a separate discipline. Smaller organizations often combine the two with outside help. We can screen for administrators with stronger security experience if that is part of your plan.

Should we look for Windows or Linux experience?

Look for experience that matches the systems you run now and expect to run soon. Many offices are mainly Windows and Microsoft 365, while web hosting and development environments often rely on Linux. We confirm your mix during the consultation and screen candidates for depth in your primary platform rather than a long list of passing exposure.
